Insurance Companies Mandating EOBRs?

Just got off the phone with a good friend of mine (own authority with two 53' reefers on the road) and during our conversation, he asked me about my experiences using electronic logs.

After a few minutes of back and forth, I asked him why all the questions, and he told me he just received a letter from his insurance carrier stating that they will not be renewing his policy unless all his trucks were equipped with EOBRs. He told me that he's been with this company for years and never has had a claim except for windshields.

Has anyone else heard of such a requirement from an insurance carrier?

I've heard that it is a federal mandate to have EOBR's not insurance but I can see the insurance industry getting involved. Just a CYA in my opinion.

One of our fleet owners is already starting to equip his trucks now, just to get ahead of it and get the bugs worked out before the mandate hits. I've been tempted to get them in the rest of the trucks as well because we have a couple drivers who have been getting rather silly violations for not crossing a t or dotting an i properly. If it can put a stop to some of those stupid violations and keep the CSA score from getting out of hand, maybe it's not a bad idea.
