IH fan "clattering".

I've asked this question over on Truck.net's truck maint. forum and haven't recieved much response, so I thought I would give it a shot here, although it might be a little off base for expediter's (class 8).

I have an older model IH (1987) that we pulled rock trailers with. The fan has always had an awful clatter to it when the clutch kicks in. I assumed maybe the fan clutch, or maybe the fan was hitting the shroud. A fried tells me that it's kind of an IH "trait". Surely there is a way to stop this? I have seen other IH's make the same noise, so there's a good chance that he's right about it being an IH trait. He works with several O/O's who drive IH's and says nearly all of them do it.

Anyone have any experience with this? I would really like to get this noise stopped.

Thanks, Arky

RE: IH fan

Is the fan metal or plastic? If it is the original 1987 metal fan, replace it with the new plastic one, the replacement will be plastic, they are now required by law. The rivited blades of the metal fan have become loose, which causes the chatter. They eventually break free and fly into the radiator or worse- into someone's head when working on the engine. It happened, that's why all new fans are one-piece plastic. If your fan is already plastic, the fan clutch is worn out.
