This happened pretty close to my house and I heard about it on my scanner, we drove over to look around and man it was a HUGE MESS, They had traffic closed in BOTH directions on 55, there were 5 helicopters stationed along the highway with about 10-12 ambulances, The Poor lady who lost her life was sitting on the top of the double decker bus directly over the driver, When the tire blew out, the state police and staff there were saying thats what they heard happened. The Top section where she was sitting made impact with the curved section of the bridge crushing her and others in there seats, the bus driver suffered the same fate but is in serious condition, it took quite a while to clear this and the traffic stretched for miles and miles...
..they were actually lucky as there is a State Police HQ not even a 1/4 mile from this bridge, exit, and the Litchfield, Staunton, and surrounding communities responded very quickly. I probably arrived about 25 mins into the occurrence, they used school buses to rush the injured to the local HS for triage and then off to hospitals by the seriousness of injuries either by ambulance or helicopter, several of the copters made quick flights to hospitals and back...
