Has anyone had to deal with sleep apnea?

I was wondering if there a many drivers that have sleep apnea? If so, do the CPAC machines help or are they not usable in this type of work? My husband did all the purchasing and delivering of our product when we had our own family business. It got to where he couldn't stay awake long enough to make the drives alone. It wasn't until after we had to close our business we found out it was sleep apnea. He's doing better and is considering going back to some form of driving if the CPAC will help enough for him to be able to drive again. I was trying to find out if others have been able to return to driving and if this will keep him from getting his DOT health card. Thank you for any help. New Team

I have been doing a lot of reading and i have found there are alot of drivers who suffer from some sort of a sleep disorder...I am also one who has a sleep disorder...Alot of drivers do use the breathing machines and say they are great and wish they would have been diagnosed earlier...I my self i have Narcolepsy..Its treated by a drug...The funny thing is about this is i took a test at one place they said nope no sleep disorder..I went to another and they made me stay in my room and watch tv and then they came in and said ok time to nape..They turn off all lights,tv,close the blinds and see how long it takes to go to sleep...Well i flunked well i was bored no,tv no nothing..It almost stopped me from getting my CDL...But i got around it...I have never fallen asleep at the wheel of a vehical,at the movies, talking to people in a relaxed atmoshere..They claim if you have narcolepsy you do..Well i dont...As for the machines and sleep aphnea i here they work great...I know a few people who have them and are rested when they wake....Do some searching on the net about sleep aphnea and go into some forums and read about the results..Good luck

My codriver has had sleep apnea for over 6 years. He uses the Cpac nightly in the truck. Since the diagonosis and the machine he has been like a new man.

It has never effected his DOT physical at all (But I wouldn't volunteer the info to the doctor or anyone. Just in case)

The CPAC machine has really helped his quality of life. But I will warn you they are expensive!

I have sleep apnea, and have been using a CPAP machine for about ten years. The change in health and energy from using the machine is wonderful. I have been driving about 100,000 miles per year since 1998, and have no problem with sleepiness or fatigue.

As you probably know, sleep apnea can be very dangerous if corrective actions are not taken. It can cause severe loss of oxygen in your system, high blood pressure, and possibly stroke. All these potential problems go away with treatment such as surgery or use of CPAP.
