GPS settings

I have a Garmin 565 truck unit and am wondering which setting is better for a straight truck, faster or shorter and why you think so?

I drive t/t but I have mine set for fastest route. I found that shortest tends to send me through slit of smaller towns with slot if traffic lights. Fastest route to me means I will be available for next load a little sooner.
