GM CUTBACK WILL SLOW 11 PLANTS


Jan. 5, 2001 | DETROIT -- General Motors Corp. will cut production at 11 plants in the United States and Canada this month, aiming to reduce a swelling backlog of unsold cars and trucks.


As of of Jan 8th, a list of idled plants will include:
Wilmington, DE
Kansas City, KS
Ste. Therese, Quebec
Oakland County, MI's Orion Township plant

Four truck plants will also be affected by the slowdown:
Doraville, GA
Shreveport, LA
Linden, NJ
Wentzville, MO

For the week of January 15th, shutdowns will include:
Shreveport, LA
Wentzville, MO
Ste. Therese, Quebec

In following weeks, additional plant shutdowns will include:
Oshawa, Ontario car plant
Oklahoma City, OK
Lordstown, OH

About 32,000 workers will be affected by these cutbacks.

GM, Ford Motor Co. and the Chrysler arm of DaimlerChrysler AG all have cut production this month, with Ford and Chrysler announcing one-week shutdowns for much of January. The moves follow a sharp decline in U.S. auto sales and no sign of recovery in the next few months.

Automakers also are trying to avoid pushing sales with higher incentives, believing that the cost of plant shutdowns -- and the resulting decrease in revenue -- is cheaper. U.S. workers covered by the United Auto Workers will get 95 percent of their regular pay, while Canadian Auto Workers will get 65 percent.

GM said Wednesday that its December sales were down 18 percent. Executives said that GM had about 1.3 million vehicles in inventory; at December's sales rate, that would leave the automaker with about 98 days supply, far higher than the 60-day industry standard.

We MUST help those poor union workers! Everyone, go buy a new car! Buy two! I'm sure that you can afford it on the revenue made from hauling all that automotive freight.

I drive for a company that delivers only to Ford. Can anyone tell me how many and which plants are effected by the production shut-down this month?

We very recently signed on with a smaller MI carrier whose main client is Ford, but we have had more work than we expected for this time of year. We carry some non automotive freight as well. Although we're a team, most of the loads have been single driver length.
