Gas pump shuts off...

I have a 2010 Ford Econoline that just recently starting acting up. When pumping fuel if I engage the auto lock on the pump it shuts down immediately. I have to pump at a very slow rate and in a few seconds I can hear what sounds like back pressure building up and it shuts off again. This occurs at the very lowest pumping rate.

This is not a matter of overfilling as this happens even when the tank is empty.

Do you have a check engin light om with an evap emitions code cuz it sounds like the vent tube is pluged

I'd still check the vent. When you fill the tank, displaced air has to go somewhere and a partially plugged vent wont let the air out fast enough.

The only thing it can be is a restriction in the filler neck but i know the vent in those plug prety easy but that usually sets an evap code ... idk let me go threw my dealer guide and see what it says

Have you tried turning the nozel 90 Deg to the right or left? Some of the nozel desugns dont flow right on vans and trucks. Also look and feel the filler tube and the donut gasket at the top of the tank they may be collapsed.

+1 for bobwolf ... you may have a rubber filler tube breaking down and collapsing

on my 99 it won't fill good if the engine is running. You can shut it off and it fills fine.

They didnt make sealed evap emitions manditory untill 2003 and i dnt beleive any one had it set up on 99 so running shouldnt effect anything ... unless it was cab and chasie the movement of the mounts on c and c's will cause a pressure lock and shute em off ... the evap emitions manual says the most likely cause of the problem with out a light is the anti siphon baffle is stuck or been jammed in an attempt of fuel theft

Did you ck the rubber hose that goes from the mouth from the filler to the tank in which there are no kinks in it?

I have 2008 Ford Econoline, and I always have to pump on slow setting or the pump will click off. I think its just the shape of the design of the Fords that the fuel gets backed up and once it reaches the gas pump nozzle it shuts off. I saw an attenedent once reverse the nozzle where the handle was facing up, and then pumped my gas at the fast rate, and it never shut off. try that if you don't have a kink in your hosing to the tank.

I'm not on the road any more so it doesn't bother me to shut the engine off now. But I do have a habit of leaving the enging running in my Nissan Quest when I gas up.Habit I guess.
