This message is for cargo van drivers only because there are 10-foot overpasses.
Good news- I found a quicker way to get through the Bronx when 95 is jammed. I was in Hartford, CT heading south on 91 during evening rush hour when I heard on Sirius that 95 was backed up in the Bronx from exit 12 all the way to the George Washington Bridge. I got off 91 just below Hartford and onto route 15, which runs just north of 95 and parallel to it through southern CT. I took 15 into NY, got on I287W, then took I87S. 87 joins 95 one mile north of the GW Bridge, so I still had one mile of jammed traffic, but one mile of backup is a hell of a lot better than 12. There was lots of traffic on that route 15, but it's a 4-lane divided highway and it was 55 mph all the way.
There are two problems with route 15:
---Every entrance ramp has a sign that says, "No Commercial Vehicles," but a trooper passed me and didn't pull me over.
---In southern CT a sign suddenly flashed yellow lights at me and said I was overheight. My Sprinter with a Qualcomm antenna is 9+1/2 feet tall, and the sign said the overpass ahead was 10+1/2 feet, but I played it safe and got off at the next exit, did a short detour and got on at the next entrance ramp. (A GPS will help with this.)
Hopefully this will save you some time...
