thinking of getting a 96fl70 to add on my small fleet, it has a cummins 5.9L with a 6 speed fuller. any opinions on this set up? it has 500,000 miles and all service records, but i don't know anything of this engine/tranny combo. any input would be great, thanks

If it had a C 8.3L engine I think it would be OK,but thats a lot of miles for that B engine. The B is not a wet sleeve engine so you cannot have a in frame rebuild, basically have to buy a new one. Remember that B engine is used in a lot of light applications, like the Dodge Ramcharger etc. Unless it!s a real good deal I would stay away from it unless the engine has been rebuilt and you can see proof that it was done.

Thanks Rich, I was not sure on the whole set up. Now I know. If that's the same size they put in a ramcharger i don't want it in a D unit Thanks again:+

I wouldn't bother with the Cummins B5.9 in a D unit. My old truck had one, and although it was reliable, 400-500k is about all you will get out of one before (as Rich stated) a replacement will be necessary. It is, however, a much cheaper engine to replace than a 3126 CAT. A new B5.9 is only around $8k. It is the same engine used in the Dodge pickups, but has a 5 quart larger oil pan. My only gripe with it was lack of power and torque with loads over 7k lbs on the truck, which was due to the small displacement. It also gets super hot when running heavy loads- so hot in fact the exhaust manifold can glow red. I got over 500k miles out of mine, and it still ran decent when traded in, but I knew it's days were reaching an end. I wonder if that is my old truck you are looking at?:)
