Chrysler LLC is ending production of its only gasoline-electric sport utility vehicles just months after the models debuted.
The hybrid versions of the Dodge Durango and Chrysler Aspen SUVs, which went on sale in October, are produced at the Newark, DE., factory that Chrysler plans to shut down by Dec. 31. The plant also makes gasoline-powered versions of the Durango and Aspen, whose sales have plummeted this year.
Chrysler spokesman Todd Goyer said the company has no plans to move the production or replace the SUVs in their current form, according to a Bloomberg report.
Ceasing production of hybrid models at a time when buyers are looking for more fuel-efficient vehicles might seem ill-advised, but Goyer said business constraints left the company with no realistic alternative.
“It's not a sound decision to keep open the plant for the hybrid demand alone,” he said.
Chrysler has no plans for new hybrid models for at least a year, Bloomberg said.
