Average Van load weight?

I found a cube van that I can modify and build a sleeper in and still have enough room for four skids in the back. It will weigh in right at 8,500 lbs with mods me and fuel.

My question is how much of the van cargo weighs in under 1,500 lbs? Truck is rated for 11,000 GVR. Will this allow me to run without a logbook UNLESS I go over that 10,001 lbs? I have found a lower weight unit, but do not like it as much.

Thanks everyone for all great help, and am looking forward to the day when I know enough to help others here! :)

If the actual GVWR rating of the vehicle is over 10k lbs, you will have to log regardless of what the unit is weighing in at loaded. Over 10k gross classes it as a commercial vehicle.

OK, so let me make sure I have this straight. I have a vehicle I found, that is a Class 2 12' cube van.

This should allow me to have someone drive it without a CDL, no scales, and this is because it's not a "commercial vehicle"? Correct?

With the 12' box, I have 4' I can use for building a sleeper, and still have enough room 8x8 for four skids if needed.

Am I understanding things correctly here? Thanks!

If your truck is tagged for GVW of 11k, then you are registered a commercial vehicle. If the van empty is 85K you are still a commercial van therefore must log. If you tag the van down to under 10K then you are okay no matter what you haul, but will only be legal up to 10K loaded.

That truck will still have to run a log no matter what you register it at since the *factory* GVW is 11,000 pounds. Remember the higher of the following will always be used as the rule:

Actual weighed amount
Registered weight
Manufacturer's GVW

So for the purposes of the rules even if you registered the truck at less than 10,000 pounds since it is rated 11,000 by the maker it would still have to be logged.
