Ariz. referendum drives targeting new law dropped

Organizers are dropping plans for two proposed referendum drives that could have challenged Arizona's new sweeping illegal immigration law at the ballot box.
A professional petition circulator behind one of the efforts says its backers pulled the plug after concluding they could not be certain of timing their petition filings in such a way to put the law on hold pending a public vote in 2012.
The chief organizer of the other drive attributes its end to a legal conclusion that the law would have been subject to legal protections under Arizona's Constitution if approved by Arizona voters.
The law, which was signed by Gov. Jan Brewer last month and goes into effect this summer, is still the subject of pending legal challenges.
