Any demand for full size pick up trucks for 1-3000

Hello all. I am trying to get my foot in the door in the hotshot business. I am an independent operator trying to get my foot in the door in the expediting business. I currently own a full size Ford F-250 Superduty pick up truck that I am considering using as my vehicle. My question to all the experienced veterans out there is: Is there such demand for this? I plan to look for loads on internet load boards and maybe contract my services to some local courier and expediting companys. I currently have a full time corporate job that consumes my time Mon - Fri. I plan on doing this on the weekends to supplement my income and if I find out that there is such demand, will consider doing it full time. My question is, with insurance, maintenance, and fuel costs being my major expenses, would it be worthwhile to pursue this? What would you seasoned veterans suggest? Any help would be appreciated!!

I would check your local area. Many fab and machine shops do custom jobs that need delivery now and then. A local here puts his gooseneck to work hauling custom conveyors for a local shop.

You are looking in the wrong area. Expediting is full time plus and a lifestyle not a weekend subsidization. You need to find a hotshot specific forum for experience and advice more specific to your situation. As mentioned, you might find someone in your area that needs periodic work.

Your biggest problem is time and distance since you are constrained by M-F. Are you going to sleep in your truck Sat. night after you deliver something 500 miles away or get a motel room? With 500 miles out on Sat. and 500 back on Sun. that's a lot of truck expense and over half of it is deadhead. I really don't see it being worthwhile with operational costs what they are.

Is your truck required for your M-F job? Your best course of action is probably to listen to Dave Ramsey, sell the truck to get out of the payment, buy a $2500 car that does the job and save a ton of money on payment, insurance and fuel. Good luck with whatever you do.

I checked that site out . It's o.k. but fairly new - not too many members . A better site is hotshothauling.com - close to 700 members there and plenty of straight info but you'll hear the same as you heard here . You can't make any money part time . The paperwork if you use the truck for both personal and business use will be a nightmare . Just ask your insurance company what the difference in rates will be if you use your truck commercially . If you gross over 10,000 lbs. you'll have to run a log book and count compensated hours on your regular job as on duty hours against your 70 hours in 8 day limit .
