For those delivering to North Charleston, SC most will go to the Pilot Truck Stop at Exit 199. Some will drive west of I-26 to the Walmart parking lot.
Within walking distance of the Walmart parking lot on US 17 is the best Shoney's I have visited. Normally, I do not review chain restaurants, but this stands out way above the norm.
As many of you already know, every Friday and Saturday night there is a seafood buffet at Shoney's. OK...so what makes this one in Summerville, SC so special.
First, they had the best selection of seafood I have ever experienced. Butterfly fried shrimp, fried popcorn shrimp, sauteed shrimp with linguine, broiled shrimp and cold, peel-n-eat shrimp. Additionally, they offered fried clam strips. clam chowder, deviled crab cakes, 4 types of fish and of course, chicken.
What struck me immediately upon entering was the neatness of the buffet area. All of the food was displayed in a very appealing manner. The veggies were fresh and crisp, all of the dressing containers were properly filled, the fruit was tender and flavorful, the selection was manifold and the serving area was spotless.
My wait staff was by the table every 10-15 minutes to refill my glass with water. She even brought me a small bowl with lemons and a glass with extra ice! Every empty plate was cleared away within a few minutes.
When my wait staff was getting ready to go on break she came around to every table and personally introduced the person who would be covering her tables during her absence. That is extremely professional and polite.
All of the empty tables were constantly checked for the proper arrangement of the condiments and tableware. As I looked down the aisle, all of them seemed in perfect alignment as if it they were ready to pass inspection by a commanding officer.
Moreover, everytime a customer would leave...out came the broom and dustpan to whisk away any and all crumbs.
Folks, for a commercial chain restaurant...this one really goes the extra mile.
The next time you are near Charleston over the weekend, stop by and give them a try. Gee...if you are in the area at anytime throughout the week...it is worth the time to eat with them!
