    E-Book reader, anyone?

So readers (including me) may learn more, please explain, why wouldn't you be without it? And, how exactly do you have it set up in your truck?

    E-Book reader, anyone?

This is a good tip. Thank you. We bought today a second Kindle Wi-Fi (not 3G) for Diane and I kept my Wi-Fi Kindle. A Wi-Fi router can be purchased at Best Buy for $100. The price difference between the Wi-Fi Kindle and Wi-Fi/3G model is $50. The $100 we saved on two Wi-Fi Kindles paid for the...

    West side story?

If I may, allow me to advise you against forming the belief that luck is a factor in business success. Don't see your load getting success as a matter of luck. See it as a matter of probability and position yourself accordingly. When you see where an offered load will take you, don't ask how...

Are you Happy with your carrier

    West side story?

I would agree that our TVAL-qualified reefer is a huge advantage in garnering good loads, and add at good pay. We have seen nothing in the Southwest to suggest that our reefer is in higher demand there than any other region of the country.

    Dry run and Dwell time

While that may be true, it is not a permanent condition. There was a time, not so long ago, when there was zero cell phone coverage. Cell phone coverage has expanded rapidly in breadth and depth and continues to do so.

    Dry run and Dwell time

When you say "we" who do you mean? It could mean a change from dwell time that begins when you check into an express center to dwell time that begins when you deliver, wherever you happen to be. "Time from Last Load" could begin immediately and the clock could pause while you were out of...

    The Granddaddy of all expediters...

Very cool commercial but I don't think a dedicated truckload run meets most people's definition of expediting. If that where the case, every reefer truck coming out of California with a load of produce might also qualify.

    E-Book reader, anyone?

Amazon says the device will go one month between charges with 3G or Wi-Fi turned off. If you use your computer to download content, it charges automatically while plugged in the USB port. The charging cord is delightfully compact. One end plugs into the device. The other end plugs into your...

    West Coast Runs

Just for fun, I'll report here our West Coast runs as they develop: 11/01/10, Monday: (Reefer) Delivered in Foothills Ranch (LA suburb), first thing in the morning, a load that we picked up on Friday in Ohio. 11/01/10, Monday: (Driver Credentials) Deadheaded to San Diego and did a three-mile...

    GVWR poll

We recently hauled a 50 lbs. load from Ohio to California. Our next load was 500 lbs. The load we will pick up today is five lbs. The weight of all of our October loads combined was less than 10,000 lbs. What is GVWR? ;) The freight we haul is not about weight. It's about the added value...

    E-Book reader, anyone?

I will be returning my Kindle Wi-Fi to the store to exchange it for a Kindle 3G Wi-Fi. The 3G frees you from using your laptop or finding a Wi-Fi hotspot for content downloads. Having discovered the daily newspapes, blogs and news feeds that are available via Kindle, the automatic and...

    E-Book reader, anyone?

Diane and I made our selection at a Best Buy store where the Kindle, Nook, Sony and at least one other e-reader are on display side by side in a special display placed at the front of the store. We could hold each device in our hands to guage the look and feel. We reviewed the product...

    Wind Blows in Our Favor

In expediting, bad weather that puts you, your truck and/or your cargo in danger is ALWAYS an acceptable reason for late deliveries. If you feel that you cannot safely proceed because of bad weather, the right thing to do is stop and notify dispatch of your situation. If you feel you can safely...

Our Truck at Wall Drug; Wall, South Dakota

Largely because of your post, and because we were passing through, Diane and I stopped in Winslow yesterday to get this photo of our truck standing on the corner in Winslow, Arizona. Full story of the visit and comments about this place are on my 10/31/10 blog entry.

Also not good if you are hauling high-value freight in which cargo thieves may be interested, or where the customers you serve expect confidentiality in their shipments. That is not to say the ap is a bad thing. Thousands of people are having great fun with it and similar location aps now and...

    E-Book reader, anyone?

In the sleeper of a moving truck, in the middle of the night, in the middle of the Mojave Desert, in less time than it takes to tell it, I downloaded onto our new Kindle e-reader a free two-week trial of a business magazine, a thorough preview of a business book I am considering for purchase, a...

    E-Book reader, anyone?

I like the quick access to books too. Get an idea or hear a recommendation, you can be looking at the book within minutes if you wish. As for listening to some books while reading others, I am intrigued by how the Kindle turns the pages for you while reading the book out loud to you (text to...
