They are. They pay for everything, including fuel, tolls, maintenance and repairs.

I don't expect there's very many of them, but what should a sprinter driver (not owner, just a driver, paid in cents per mile) normally be paid? Is $0.30 / mile good or bad for a long distance (not local) driver?

Look around. There's often local expediting, 3PL, and others, who hire on local people with trucks and liftgates to pick up and deliver. I'd hire someone to drive the truck and do that for you, to pay for the truck... and keep wrenching to earn a living. I don't know what they pay diesel...

All other factors being equal, you're absolutely right. But not all other factors are equal. The issue here, is that for emissions purposes, this thing is very detuned. Given the weight and size, it should easily do 30-35 mpg at 55 mph. But it doesn't. It gets a whopping 21-23. But...

This has nothing to do with changing laws of physics. It has to do with demonstrating horrendous inefficiency.
