Military challenge

Another thread got me thinking about this. Here's the challenge. You have to post about your own outfit and service and not say anything about anybody else's unit. I know there's a lot of inter-service rivalry and probably a lot of it is good natured but since folks may read this that won't be in on the inside joke please leave them out. Nothing but positives please.

I wasn't in because I have significant foot problems and couldn't qualify. Two surgeries later I still need at least 1 more. When I can't walk I'll get it.

Out of my dad and 10 uncles all 11 were in WW2 and all 11 came home and amazingly enough not 1 of the 11 was even injured. My dad was in the 36th division, 141st infantry. He drove the biggest truck and got the most important loads because he was the best driver of his outfit. He supplied from north Africa all the way to the end. My favorite uncle was in the navy and was a primary radio operator aboard ship. One was air force and the rest were army. I have a few cousins and in-laws that also served in the interim years.

This isn't "my own" as you requested but it's family and that's the same as you posted so I guess it's ok.

Had several family members down through the years in the military. Uncles during WW2 and such. My older brother was Navy during the Vietnam years, my kid brother was a Marine in the late 70's.

The ones I'm most proud of (of course) are my kids. My daughter was in the Air Force and worked in communications. Oldest son was a chopper pilot for the Army and my youngest son is an aircraft electrician in the Air Force.

I'll let the Hubs post about his and his father's experiences.

I never served, but have had several family members who did. My paternal grandfather was in the 101st and was in Europe from '44 to the end of the war. He never talked about it, but I know he saw quite a bit of action. My other grandfather was in the Navy but never left Norfolk. They wouldn't send him overseas for some health reason but he stayed in Norfolk as a mechanic. I had some other great uncles and cousins who were in WWII, Korea, and Nam, but I don't have the details. When I was reading the other thread I was wondering just how many military end up in trucking. Judging from the numbers I've met around the country, it must be a large number.

By all means also post about family. I just don't want it to turn into "you guys in the whatever outfit were creampuffs" or whatever the actual military jabs from one group to another are. There's plenty of positives without poking at others. Do that in PM's if you have to.

Since hubby doesn't post, I'll have to do it for him. ;) He retired from the Navy after 21 years (I am the retired wife) He was a Submariner for all but the last 2 years. Nuclear Machinist Mate, ELT (Engineering Laboratory Technician). That last part he hated, much too political for him. He was on Boomer sub's (3 1/2 months in 3 1/2 months out) and those "out" times were totally underwater, no port calls, no contact with home.
He was also on fast attack subs, still not many port calls, but at least a few letters came home.
It was an interesting life, and made me stronger for it.
We also have a son that was with the MP Company, 82nd Airborne Division. He did 2 tours in Iraq and decided to get out at the end of his enlistment. He is now a deputy in a special task force with the Collier County Sheriffs Dept in Florida.

Its 1970, I'm a senior in HS. I have hair down to my butt and playing guitar in rock band.
Life is cool and I'm just cruisin.
Then some one re-installs something called the draft. Didnt pay a whole lot of attention to it as I'm playing music, a hippy with nothing to worry about, a male 18 and buff.
Reality check, my birthday is March 6th, yeah it just passed.
So the Lottery picks are pulled.
March 6th is number one.
Life sucks!!!!
I started singing a Country Joe Fish Song....Well its one two three what we fighting for.....
anyway I end up at the local Draft Board for my physical. Here I am, 18, buff, a jock (with long hair), there they are, older, buffed, crusty, with short hair...and they're all grinning at me
as i go from room to room, cough please, stand on the scale please, turn your head please,
I felt like Arlo Guthrie.
While waiting to get into see the head Doc for the final physical I am signing papers saying i am of age and who to notify in case of incident forms.
Well the Doc comes in, has me do some squats listens to my heart has me do some squats
checks my reflexs and has me do more squats.
He says your done son, thanx for coming down you can go home.
it seems the two blown out knees I got playing HS football would keep me out of the
service.
So off to Kent State I went.
Not quite a military story but its as close as I came.
God Bless America and ALL who have Served.

I find the little interservice jabs kind of amusing myself. I had two uncles who were in different branches and they were always doing that, but let anyone criticize the military in general and they would stick together and rip that person a new one. I never served but I have an immense respect for anyone who did.

Fastman:
You bet, enough said. A tribute to your bro for his sacrifice and to your family for their loss. Our country has involved itself in a lot of different things that many question, but we can never stop supportting the ones who serve and honoring those who gave all.
