Layover

Nightshift is OTR right now, and while he's been out he's been looking for expeditiers to talk to. Here's the question he asks...
Where the heck are you guys? :7
He said he very rarely sees expediters at truckstops or rest areas, so where do you guys "layover" at?

Well good question.[br]
;-)
We are not in truck stops only for fuel and some down time.
many of us are at the dock site where we drop or very close by
weighting for the next load offer. Truck stops are the last place I want to be.
Most are very unfriendly wast a lot of your time and are very over price on there
invantory as well as fuel. There are many better places to park for down time.
I have found that the people at the company docks to be helpful and there are restrooms there.
also most of them are quite with on fumes in the air like at T.S.
So my thoughts are many drivers do the same.

Here is one of my little secrets, one I probably shouldn't share, but as parking is getting to be a real hassle for trucks with these new log book rules, every truck seems to be solar powered now and finding parking after 6 PM is not easy. After a run, I go to a truck stop to fuel and get the free shower. I then find a place to eat at, and head for sleep. For this, I go to industrial complexes. 9 times out of 10 there will be a factory that is empty and for sale. I hide at the back of the shipping/receiving parking lot at these spots, and have never been chased out of one. If you obey all laws and do not litter (this is ANY litter- dog waste, cigarette butts, bottles, etc) you should not encounter any hassles from local law enforcement agencies who patrol the complexes either, and they are safer than the truckstops as they don't attract much attention from criminals, and are usually very quiet. No listening to Ronnie Reefer or hissy-fitting air dryers or Horton fan clutches.

Sometimes we use Hospital parking lots, just park away from the emergency room where all the action is and you won!t be bothered. They are open all night and always have clean rest rooms.

Nightshift doesn't like truckstops for all the reasons listed above. If possible he uses rest areas or he parks at the shipper/receiver. Which brings me back to the one of the reasons we are considering expediting. Parking! Some of the places listed above are impossible for a 70ft rig, along with the dreaded signs "NO Semi Parking"! :'(

I maay have some insight here not as an expediter (not switched to that field yet) but as a tow truck driver working alot of dead night shifts. I have found that being creative works for a lot of expediters around here (windsor Ontario) with the loing waits at the border I have seen units every where including ....

-shopping malls (the farther away from the major truck routes the better the chance for no hassle

-grocery stores (buy something keeps them happy!!)

-fast food stops (once again they do not like to kick out customers)

-new subdivisions at the end of dead end streets usually nobody there to bug you at night at least and usually st least a free port-a-john for well you know...

I hope this kinda helps someone at least:+

We look for a closed business on the way to delivery, hopefully with a place to eat nearby. After delivery, we head there and shut down for some restful sleep, away from the fumes and noise of truckstops.

We usually checkin within 5 miles of delivery and get our sleep and our food that way. Really keeps the d/h miles down too.

Truckstops are for fueling.
