Gov. O'Malley says signs shouldn't distract drivers

Mar 18, 2010 - 10:15:25 AM | By The Associated Press

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley says the state should stop displaying real-time travel information to drivers if it's distracting them.

State Highway Administration officials have recently started using message boards to tell drivers how long it will take them to reach destinations.

O'Malley told WTOP's "Ask the Governor" program Wednesday that the signs "should be used only for essential messages with regard to safety or traffic rerouting, or things of that nature."

The boards are typically used to display detour routes and emergency alert messages.
