Have to disagree. Drove a Ford Excursion 3/4 ton vehicle could get 14 mpg on highway not towing trailer. When towing and it was a very very tall enclosed trailer it dropped to 9 maybe 10 mpg , hilly highway at that .
N 14 Cummins in 2000 model international 9900 sometime seems like has a flutter on acceleration, not quite a dead miss though . it usally smoothes out at a constant speed by which I mean cruising speed. Fuel filters have been changed though. Any thoughts on a possible method of diagnosis ?

Thanks for the replies. I sort of wish the truck I drive had an ESPAR or WEBASTO style heater, particularly if the boss keeps threatening , I meant offering me a load to the northwest

Not being any sort of technician, I have read that corroded electrical connections , bad ground at batteries, fuses or breakers, the computer itself can cause problems.

Greasytshirt was explaining how the ecu could not properly control worn or failing injectors, increasing soot build up in the DPF. I was wondering if failing soot sensors might be a failure point as well?

Sprinter owners apparently need their own Greasytshirt. Let me edit that comment, any brand truck or van owner with DPF equipped diesel might want their own greasytshirt.
