The contractor ideas and suggestions have come via the contractor council meeting, emails, telephone calls and speaking to contractors who visit our building.”

    Jeff Braden, EDS Director of Safety and Recruiting, is a 20-year emergency freight veteran. After a 19.5-year sting at another major expedited carrier, he joined EDS five months ago.

    He tells us, "Our tractors are averaging between 2500-3,000 miles a week with the average length of haul at around 400 miles. The mileage rate figures out to an average of around $1.30 per mile."

    Taylor Made Express is a privately-held expedited freight company with corporate headquarters based in Milwaukee along with a satellite office in East Peoria, IL .

    The company handles a variety of freight within the 48 States and points in Canada.

    Founded in 1996 with two cargo vans, Taylor Made's fleet of 150 trucks is a mix of 80 percent company drivers and 20 percent owner-operators. The company drivers are utilized primarily for local courier work and pick and delivery.

    When FedEx Surface Expedite Network was first announced, some Custom Critical contractors expressed concerns that freight might be diverted from Custom Critical trucks to FedEx Freight trucks via Surface Expedite Network.

    When EO mentioned that concern, the FedEx representatives agreed that EFS means more freight for Custom Critical contractors.

    "At that time, we were doing what I call missionary work. We would go into a business and tell them, 'We're Roberts Express' and they would say 'Who?'

    "We would explain what we did and that, when they would call, we would make the pickup in 90 minutes or less with the same truck and driver making the delivery straight through, non-stop and door to door."

    "I would explain that we were faster and cheaper than air freight on runs of up to 1,000 miles. They would look at us like we were from Mars and would say, 'C'mon, you don't really do that.'"
