Case #1 :
A Grand Rapids Mi. police officer was charged with 2nd degree murder in the death of a individual during a traffic stop. The individual resisted arrest and grabbed the officers taser before being killed. The individual was later revealed to be heavily intoxicated with alcohol and well over the legal limit. The decision to prosecute the officer by the prosecutor came after around 3 months of investigation and deciding whether to go forward with charges or not. This incident made national news and there were some local protests in Grand Rapids demanding an arrest and prosecution.
Case # 2 :
A motorist driving a pickup truck is involved in a head on collision with a semi. According to 911 calls to police dispatch the pickup driver was acting strange, was holding a knife, and had self inflicted cuts on his arms. One of the first responding officers came upon the person with the knife and immediately ordered him to drop the knife. The individual didn’t drop the knife immediately and allegedly took a step towards the officer before said officer began firing his service weapon. The individual fell to the ground and was getting back up with the knife in hand. The officer yelled to drop the knife again. The individual immediately did not. The officer proceeded to empty the rest of his clip. Nine rounds total.
After a 3 week investigation, the officer was cleared of any wrongdoing.
This case didn’t make national news and was just covered locally by the news.
Two cases with similarities. Both officer’s used deadly force after their perceived threat of great bodily harm by individuals.
Can anyone spot the differences in the two cases and why the disparities in news coverage between the two?
Also, what other actions could the officers in the two incidents have done differently? I have my opinions, but would like to hear from others first. Thanks.
