Truck Capacities

A recent post requesting the capacity of a straight truck has piqued my interest in the weight capacities of the B, C, D trucks of some of the expedite carriers.

When Rene' and I started expediting, the standard maximum weights by truck size were A-500#; B-2000#; C-5000# and D-13000#. Over the years, many expedite carriers have come and gone and those that have endured and prospered have developed their individual tariffs and definitions of B, C and D loads. The A loads and A trucks (mini-van or pick-up) have pretty much been removed from most expedite fleets and the loads have been accomodated by the B van.

Some of the expedite carriers' published cargo capacities by truck size are as follows:

BOLT..........B-2500, C-5000, D-12,000

CTX..minimum..B-2000, C/D 12,000

EXPRESS-1.....B-2000, C-5000, D-13,000

FECC..........B-2500, C-5000, D-13,000

LEA...........B-1000-3000, C-3000-5000, D-13,000

PANTHER.......B-2000-4000, C-4001-9500, D-9501-12,500

TRI-STATE.....B-3000, C-3001-10,000, D->10,000

I work for a small expediter in Indiana. They utilize cargo vans ( or long bed pickups with tall toppers), cube trucks and straight trucks. They use the following method of determining rate.

VAN/PICKUP- Up to 3000#
Up to 2 skids 48X48X48 (normal)
CUBE-3001 to 5000#
3-6 normal skids or up to 3 oversize skids
STRAIGHT TRUCK- Over 5001#
More than 6 normal skids

Sprinters are used and can get cube rate for more than 2 skids and heights greater than 48"

I don't know what the max for the straight truck is. They have several different trucks with different GVWR's.

I see panther will hire 3/4 or 1 ton cargo vans. Isnt 4000 lbs. a little bit much for a 3/4 ton van.

4,000 lbs. is a little to much even for a 1-ton and a real bad idea for a 3/4 ton.

GM 3500 with a gas engine comes in somewhere around 5100 lbs

GVW is 9660 lbs

9660 - 5100 = 4560

It is pushing it but .....

Con-Way required vans to be able to carry 3000# legally. I have a long wheel base Chevy 3500. I just got a weight for Panther and found I have put on a few pounds in the last couple of years. Yeah my van too. I plan on going through my van and eliminating some fat. Where does it all come from? A little here, a little there, it sure adds up.

Sorry, I misread the question. Thought you were talking about determination of van loads vs cube loads vs straight truck loads instead of what the minimum payload requirement is for said vehicle.
