PHOENIX -- Dozens of photo-enforcement cameras on freeways throughout the state are coming down this week.
A total of 76 cameras will cease operation on Thursday.
The photo-enforcement program, which was meant to catch speeders on Arizona's freeways, has been controversial from the beginning. The cameras first went up nearly two years ago.
While the cameras have done a good job at snapping speeders, drivers have been ignoring the tickets.
According to the Department of Public Safety, the cameras led to more than 700,000 tickets in the first year of operation. Many of those people, however, never paid the fines.
Some say that's because the tickets were mailed, making them easy to ignore.
Any driver who ignored a photo-enforcement ticket was supposed to have been served. One problem was that process servers were inundated and simply couldn't get to everybody. If a person was not served, his or her ticket became invalid after three months.
The speeding tickets should have generated about $90 million in the first year of the program. About one-third of that was actually collected.
Gov. Jan Brewer, who has always been critical of the program, decided earlier this year not to renew Arizona's contract with Redflex Traffic Systems, the company that runs the cameras.
Opponents of the cameras were thrilled with that decision. They called the cameras a distraction that actually caused wrecks. They also said the cameras were a violation of people's constitutional rights.
Supporters of the photo-enforcement program said the camera saved lives.
"We actually had almost 22 percent fewer fatality collisions in Metro Phoenix," said DPS Lt. Steve Harrison in October 2009. "That equates to 12 actual fatal collisions that didn't happen, which statistically equates to about 13 lives that were saved."
A full audit on the program's effectiveness will not be complete until this fall.
Tickets issued based on photos snapped before Friday, July 16 -- right up until midnight -- will still have to be paid. Those drivers will still be served.
Attorney Christopher Corso said his office has been flooded with calls from people who have questions about outstanding tickets.
"If you have a ticket and you're served with that ticket, you're going to have to deal with it," Corso said.
While the cameras on the freeways are going dark, many cities will continue to run speed and red-light cameras on their streets.
Earlier this year, there was a grass-roots effort to get a measure on the ballot to ban all photo-enforcement cameras in Arizona, including those on local streets. Not enough signatures were collected to get that initiative on the November ballot.

They should leave the cameras up and use them for accidents to help prove who ran a light and caused the accident and then give out ticket with higher penalty like jail time

Yea let's just through the whole darn earth in jail. Some things just do not warrant jail. They are called accidents for a reason and every one is susceptible to making a couple mistakes at some point in their life. I would venture to say every person on this site has ran a light or stop sign at some point in their life. If someone says they never have they most likely didn't realize it happened. If your drunk or something when you run a stop light there are laws on the books to handle that already.

Sorry but running a red light is not an accident and if you cause an accident and injury/death as a result of running a red light then yes you should go to jail

We've all been there, you're approaching the light and it turns yellow right at that moment when you have to decide to mash the brakes hard or roll through. You roll through and the light turns red while you're in the intersection. Very unlikely that you'll cause an accident, but still a ticket. Some of these photo intersection have even been found to have short yellows.

Yes I agree with the short yellow problem and that should be eliminated but alot of people run the red lights even when they have time to stop on purpose or because they were distracted talking on the **** phone, talking to a passenger, messing with map or paper work , etc. so accept responsibility and go to jail

If you cause a death or serious injury there are laws to handle that. Reckless driving can be used for many situations. The point I was making is to through someone in jail just for running a light or stop sign and having an accident is a little much. My mom had one accident and one ticket in her so far 90 years of living. It was because she missed a stop sign and had an accident, no one was hurt. I do not think something like that would warrant jail. (she doesn't drive now days :). Running a light can be an accident if you do not do it on purpose and are not under the influence of something, cell phones included. There is a lot of things in life we have no intention of doing but do, they are called accidents.

Guy ran a red light in NY and broadsided my van. No one was hurt but it cause $5000 damage to my van. The guy said he wasn't sure he ran the light but he was distracted (his words), 2 witnesses said he did...no ticket was issued because the LEO said it was an accident, he didn't see it....he should have gone to jail!?!? Wow...he didn't even get a ticket.....

No, no jail time for rnning a red light. Did you run a light and hurt or kill someone, there are already laws to deal with that, up to and including jail time..that fits...but not where there was no accident....

The guy didnt get a ticket for running a red light even though he caused the accident by running a red light? the driver says he not sure if he ran the light what was he doing sleeping? distracted? what? sorry but I think the cop was wrong he should have wrote the ticket. And MY point is the camara should be used to catch those that run the lights on purpose and dont try to tell me people dont run lights on purpose and the cameras should be used for so called accidents where a driver ran a light. I saw a tractor trailer run a red light on purpose today he might use the excuse he didnt see it change to red but that would be because he was tailgating the tractor trailer in front him but the light was red long before he entered the intersection so he should have gotting a ticket for tailgating and runnning the light and if that had caused and accident then have nice night in jail

this is good news ! ,
the company that runs them cameras become very creative in setting drivers to fail .
as one that runs A.Z on a weekly basic ,i can tell that it was a great hazard when they just came out ,and nothing more then a money collector in recent time .
speeders got away by running in herds .
most professional speeders got their plates sprayed on anyway .

i always thought that the stationery ones looks like E.T ...

as to the reds ,if i recognize a red light camera ,then i never cross the intersection on green light .
if there's one car ahead of me ,and the light turns green ,i let it go ,and simply wait for the light to turn red ,so i will be the first in line when it turns green again .
if i come to an already green light ,i stop ,and wait for it to turn red.
driving a TT can be tricky ,so if i need to make a turn ,i normally continue straight ,and circle the block ,so i will not have to make a turn infront of a red light camera .

Well while we are on the subject, LA has decided to boycott Arizona, but they have an exception. The company that installed and maintains the traffic enforcement cams across LA is in Arizona and they have a contract with them until this fall. LA decided to 'allow' them to continue on with maintaining them while ignoring the needs of the invaders and open border people.

GOOD !!!!! Rip em all down. Enough of all this camera non-sense.
Vacation'd in the UK 2 years ago and I can tell yall one thing, The
Brits hate um. Walking thru central London and darn near every pole has a cam mounted to it. The M24 freeway is chocked full of cams and are busted up nightly. Supposeably they have a full time repair crew that does nothing but put'um back together.
I just dont believe a society that needs cams wathcing our every move is the kinda place im interested in living.

Like the 15 miles of 475 going down To Macon...what is with that anyhow....every lamp post has a camera for that stretch...

from Wiki:
The road has also been equipped with traffic cameras, which are a part of the Georgia Navigator system that has been extended via fiber optics all the way from metro Atlanta, nearly 100 miles or about 150 kilometers to the north-northwest.
