This hillbilly can sing when she isn't acting stupid.

I had never once sat through an entire Miley Cyrus song and listened to her voice. Her Hollywood antics were too much for me to overcome. Today, while sifting through Bluegrass music videos on Youtube, I saw Miley had a video version of Dolly Parton's "Jolene" ....

Miley Cyrus - Jolene - The Backyard Sessions (HD) - YouTube

As an Eastern Kentuckian who used to cringe at Billy Ray Cyrus, maybe his real contribution to American pop culture is his daughter: www.youtube.com/watch?v=f2ELvPCgDAL

It's really sad when a talented young artist goes down the path of self-destruction.

Goodness. This girl can't sing a lick IMHO.

Kinda like those bands, whereby anyone can play the song in a garage or basement.

There seems a reason she has to resort to antics.....that voice/tone is not taking her anywhere special?

Neither could Rod Stewart, Joe Cocker, Janice Joplin, etc, etc, etc . . .
That doesn't mean they were not talented.

It took her to a nice total in the bank.

Isn't there a reason we all drive for a living instead of sitting behind a control panel producing artists?
HMMMMM

Well, Joe Cocker and Rod Stewart both could sing....you may not care for the voice, but they could carry a tune. This gal is no better than some karaoke singers I've had to suffer through, back in the day.

As for paycheck? Guess that's the bottom line. Sad to know all one needs nowadays, is a performance fitting this country's idea of entertainment. To that regard, foam fingers are a rather inexpensive capitol investment.

Could make a living out of "producing artist's" of this venue. See them holding signs up at intersections all the time. Maybe it is time to run the van home, and make the offer.

She is actually a pretty good signer. I worked in music for 15 years and probably the majority of shows I did house sound or monitors for was country. The girl isn't bad.

You may not care for her voice, or even like the way she sings, but she can carry a tune. I'm not much of a fan of hers, but I do have two degrees in music, more than enough training and experience to know if someone can sing or not. She can.

Live, acoustic, radio studio version of Wrecking Ball shows without any question she can.

This girl could sing. Don't listen to any of it now.....had to dig back into the memory archives, and that takes a heep bit a doin.

Since the original was live, only fair to compare to live version:

Natalie Merchant - Wonder (1995) E. Rutherford, NJ - YouTube

Miley is average at best. Have a niece who is near opera quality singer, and does weddings and the like. Guess it depends on what a person likes. Miley can take a back seat, for this poster. Her voice is flat, no range (just like daddy), and little harmonious representation. IMV of course. :p

I liked music better before MTV convinced everyone that a song requires a [stupid] video.
And Miley can sing, but so can many others, who don't eclipse their talent with "Hollywood antics".
Her tasteless performance with Thicke was so disgusting, I'd never willingly watch or listen to her again.
Besides, I like Dolly Parton's version of anything better than anyone else's. Because her voice is unique, and because I like women a little on the trashy side, but porn in public isn't cool at all.
[Now I'm hearing Sawyer Brown singing "That's a cocktail waitress in a Dolly Parton wig! "I know, Dad - aint she COOL?!" lol] ;)

Yeah, Natalie Merchant can sing. Funny you should mention her compared to Miley and label Miley as having a flat voice, since Natalie is famous for her flat voice, not just flat in dynamic range, but also tonality flat in the lower register, which is why she has to be very careful about the key she sings in.

Natalie is a contralo with the classic dramatic contralto vocal range, weight, timber, texture and transitional points. She has an effective (natural, comfortable) range of D3 to E5 (2 octaves plus two half tones).

Miley is an alto but with a mezzo-soprano tessitura and weight, which means her vocal range overlaps that of a contralo nearly to the lower register, and extends midway into that of a coloratura mezzo-soprano. She has an effective range of E3 to A5 (2 octaves plus 5 half tones). So when you say "her voice is flat, no range," you really don't know what you're talking about. Might be better if you just say you don't care for her and leave it at that, rather than trying to come up with ways to deride her.

If your niece is well trained in music, she should be able to instantly recognize the basic vocal type and range of any singer after about three notes, just from the tessitura and timber of the voice.
