Thinking for yourself

Sorry, but the disorder Oppositional Defiance isn't about thinking for yourself, or questioning authority, it's about hostility and defiance without provocation. It's well outside the bounds of normal behavior, even for hormonal teenagers. It's responding to a perceived slight or offense with a submachine gun kind of behavior. It's hostility on steroids, when the kid isn't.
And the bit about Mozart being "medicated into barren normality" is just hogwash: most people with ADD find the medication helps them achieve more, instead of buzzing off in 8 directions at once, without ever finishing anything. Mozart might have accomplished even greater things, who knows?
It may be true that psyche docs tend to overprescribe medications, but to suggest that one might be diagnosed with a mental illness strictly because they think for themselves is also utter hogwash. It's unfortunate that so many seem to buy into it, though, and let others tell them what they think.
