Tell me if this wrong...

I am looking for a hard working individual to fill one of my cargo vans that is leased on with Conway Now. The van is a 2001 ford E-250 the van will be available around the first of september. I am looking for someone willing to stay out for a few weeks the pay is a 63/37 split driver pays all fuel, tolls, regular maintenance (ie oil change) and personal expenses.
Now why would an owner want a driverto pay for routine maintenance,of their van? Maybe if the driver was getting 90 percent. To me that is so wrong!!!What do you think about this? Gee makes me want to go right out and drive for this owner, maybe make the payments on the van also. HA HA HA !!!

OK.. you confused me at first.. LOL.. I thought YOU were posting the ad! I found the original ad then..

I don't see it as 'wrong' just different. It really depends on what the owner considers 'routine' maintenance.

If it's just an oil change, it would be no big deal to me, here's why..

he's paying 63% vs the usual 60%... say for example you gross $1500 per week... at 60% your pay would be $900, and 63% your pay would be $945.00. That's $180.00 more per month.

I don't think a $25.00 oil change on a van would upset me too much if I got paid $180.00 more per month on average. That extra $155.00 that is left would more than pay for the average tolls too probably, or pretty close at least.

When looking at a compensation package, you have to look at the overall picture. Also, interview the owner, see if you can talk to his other drivers. Is he pleasant to deal with? Does he have a good reputation? Does he pay on time?

I'm sure there are as many ways to set up compensation as there are fleet owners out there.. instead of focusing just on the details, tho they are inportant.. you have to look at the bottom line also.. in other words... If I compare Owner A to Owner B, which one am I more likely to get along with, and get PAID!

Hope this helps...

Well, since you asked, here's my two cents. Pretty soon O/Os are going to run out of things to put on the backs of drivers. Why not just say, you can have the truck, just pay my 10% a month till it's payed off? But then you don't have a truck. Hmmm...I would say if you need a driver more than the next o/o, pay him more than the next o/o without the catch. He's paying 60%? Pay 61 or 62. If I were a driver, I wouldn't want to pay someone elses maintainence bill, truck wash, or for lights, tires, or windshield wipers. Fuel is bad enough LOL
Want a good gimmick? Pay the driver, listen to the driver(especially if you don't drive), and treat the driver with respect! You'll keep drivers even if you have a 30" sleeper...but don't push it! :7

If the driver is paying for the maintenance, he is not your driver. You are leasing him the truck. You at that point can't make any other demands. If for example the driver decides not to drive for a month, you would have no say.
Secondly, if the driver is maintaining your truck, you would not always know to what extent.
On the drivers side, how does he(she) know you are not buying a lemon.
Being new means nothing. Look at all the posts regarding M2's and sprinters. Remember.....you bought the truck, not the driver.
I would not recommend this type of arrangement. If you proceed in being the owner, you have to carry the owners responsibility. This is an area I speak with some pretty good authority.
Hope it helps.
