I have seen that you have had a lot of responses in which some seem to be pushing you away more than anything. For cargo van that 10 cent fuel air charge itself will pay for 95percwnt of your fuel. As for putting 10k back for the slow months well I have been with panther for 7 years and haven't had a bad month yet unless it was my fault. In a 6 month time period I average 76 k miles in a straight truck. (Yes it's a team truck). The deal is as follows. If you want to make money then you have to drive. Half these drivers out here won't take a load unless it has a bonus, or is going here or there or has x amount of miles. I take loads any where any time and NEVER have an issue with getting back to a decent board. As for cargo vans, well my son owns 2 that is leased onto panther and he has no issues at all when it comes to loads. But then again he takes the loads offered providing they are fairly decent.

Well, I just wanted to thank everyone here, you all helped me avoid a big mistake and taught me a few good lessons. I ended up not signing with that fleet owner and now am working with a new one who has been doing this for over 30 years and has owned a fleet for the past 10. He's doing the 60/40 split, 100% deadhead and empty moves, still with Panther. He also allows up to 55% advance of each load's income paid upon arrival at pickup (which is great for starting from nothing). All other expenses are reimbursed 100% or paid directly by the owner.

Starting next week, finally!

Lets not forget the variables for example on the company you are considering working for. It's a known fact that they will broker a load to a carrier if they get a better offer then what you are contracted to them for.

Now to me that's ass backwards. My job as a business owner and fleet owner is to maintain and leverage enough business so my people have the work and we all profit.

In my opinion a brokerage should be for overflow that once you run out of capacity or it's in a area you don't have a truck then you broker the freight so you never have to tell your contracts no you don't have coverage. It's a tool.

And your company continually gets better rates from cut throat carriers better then they pay their fleet owners on a contracted rate so your own company who made you all these promises is double dipping because they have the money to pay you to run the freight and you may be right on top of that load yet the greed sets in and they roll the dice on your future and they decide they can make twice as much and they give the freight to the company sitting next to you at a truck stop while you sit and continue to wait.

My advice is never ever ever negotiate on your deadhead. You may agree at reasonable rate but if you eat all the deadhead miles your just continuing to burden yourself even more financial.

The owner your driving for is for profit. The company he is signed to is for profit sounds like a used car salesman trying to convince you it's a Cadillac but he throws you the keys to a Ford Escort

The larger companies tend to play the numbers game to where your just capacity for them if they need you rather then you being important.

The corporate rule is what's good for them is not good for you.

Best of luck

It will be a gas dodge sprinter, I believe. If I did want to make enough to save/have extra $ to pay the bills, what would be your suggestions? I assume SOMEONE is making money doing this or no one would. If I could make $2500-3000/month, I would be ok with that.

SOMEONE (actually several people) are making money doing this.....

The company shipping the product makes money.

The broker (if involved) makes money.

The company with the contract from the broker is making money.

Unfortunately, by the time it filters down to the driver level ...we don't make money..

Welcome to trucking (and that's before self driving trucks and robots make us all obsolete)!

Andrew

PS - It's not all doom and gloom, I just got a 26' truck and my own authority so I am hoping to keep running before R2D2 gets my driving gig......Good luck

I'm late to the party but here goes. And I'm writing this for anyone and everyone considering expediting so while it's snippy and snarky at times it's not personal to you, it's in general.

Have you ever heard of electricians? Plumbers? Dental hygienists? They are all careers. They all require hundreds of hours of education and training for competency. Expediting is a career. You should be approaching it the same way.

You should read back at least 3 years in the General, Newbie and Recruiter forums. You don't have to read every single word but you should read every single thread title and take the time to think about if it might apply to you. If so, then you read every single word in that thread. It will take you dozens and dozens of hours. That's the minimum basic education for this career. Kind of like getting a 2 year Associates Degree from Community College.

Then you'll know enough to ask all the questions you need to ask and you'll know enough to understand the answers given, as well as which answers to focus on and which to pretty much ignore.

The FSC (fuel surcharge) doesn't pay for your fuel. It helps you pay for your fuel. Be very clear about when it's paid and when it isn't and how much it is. The same for deadhead pay, if any companies still do that, detention pay, layover pay etc. etc. etc.

The standard, meaning most people go with it, split is 60/40. The 60 side pays for all of the fuel. The 60 side gets 100% of the FSC money. Anything other than that and you are being ripped off because you are too new to know any better and like so many people you don't get the proper education before entering this new career. Good luck.

LDB, you're so right on the money! Over the last couple of years I've just been snooping around these threads, thinking about the business...trying to pick up as much information as possible. Well, in the last month or so I'm thinking about jumping in. I'm an old goat...but believe I have at least 5 good years left in me. Finalizing my CDL B now and thinking about going to FXCC as strait truck driver...been talking to the recruiter. Also thinking about buying my own truck...I know, I've have people think I'm a "nut"...I might be but I'm going to give it a shot. Will still be active here to learn as much as possible....thanks

It's obvious you did little to no research when entering into your new career vastly under funded. You are a new member with one post. Two if you count duplicates. That post(s) is nothing but a rant by a person that is too lazy to do some simple online research into the wonderful world of van expediting. Live and learn.
