Pieces of history

As expediters we all have opportunities to transport unique types of freight that common carriers never see. Many times its based on the value of the freight or the special handling required in loading and transporting the freight.

Today we had the pleasure of delivering pieces of history to the Airline History Museum at Hanger 9 in Kansas City,MO. The freight was three TransWorld Airlines jet engine stands saved from the scrap pile. They are for a L-1011 jetliner that will be delivered to the museum the end of April. It is being flown in on its last flight to undergo a complete restoration which requires the engines to be removed temporarily.

This L-1011 will then become part of the museum's collection depicting the history of commercial aircraft which begins with the propeller driven DC-3 (1941), Martin 404 (1951), Lockheed Super Constellation (1959) thru the transition to jet power with the L-1011. All were part of the TWA fleet at some point in their lives.

This jet was found in the desert boneyards and was destine to fade from history. Yet through hard work in making the acquisition and the efforts of many volunteers, this bird will get a new lease on life and be brought back to pristine condition for many to enjoy.

This museum is well worth a visit while in Kansas City,MO and is located at 201 Lou Holland Drive. There is room for C and D sized trucks in their parking lot and T/Ts need to call ahead. I know we will return from time to time to see the progress on the L-1011.
