TV To Go: Slingbox vs. LocationFree
Next time you miss a ball game or episode of your favorite show due to a business trip, think seriously about going "LocationFree," as Sony puts it. Sling Media's Slingbox and Sony's LocationFree both costs around $200, and both let you watch what's on your TV at home on your computer screen, anywhere in the world you can find a broadband connection, including at Wi-Fi hotspots. These boxes connect up to your home video devices, including cable boxes, VCRs, DVD players and TiVos or other hard disk recorders. They also hook up to your Internet connection, from where they stream your video over the Web to your laptop or PDA, on demand. You can even program your TiVo from afar, through a "virtual" remote control.

The Sony LocationFree supports playback on PCs, Macs and PSPs, and soon Windows Mobile devices. The Slingbox supports PCs and Windows Mobile, with Mac playback coming. Sony sells its box separately, or bundled with a portable Wi-Fi TV, for carrying around the house or onto the patio. We can't wait to watch Lost from our hotel room in Tokyo!
