National ID Card .. c

Continued from Mexican Driver thread. I felt it needed it's own thread. When I first heard about this card, I didnt' think it was a big deal. However, like others, the more I hear, the worse it sounds. I'm hoping enough public attention is brought to this. I don't think most people know what is in it.

Actually, the card is real. However, at this time, it is tied up incontroversy. It is a very confused issue.
Basically, as Robsdad said, it establishes a national ID. Without this ID, you won't be able to fly, get a loan, or get a job.

It was supposed to take effect May 11, 2008, but has been delayed until December 31, 2009, because many people and many states are fighting it.

What bothers me, and others, is the section number of USC this law falls under: See anything funny about a National ID card being created under Title 42, section 666?

I wish this was a joke.

Quote:

After December 31, 2009, "a Federal agency may not accept, for any official purpose, a driver's license or identification card issued by a state to any person unless the state is meeting the requirements" specified in the Real ID Act. States remain free to also issue non-complying licenses and ID's, so long as these have a unique design and a clear statement that they cannot be accepted for any Federal identification purpose.

The federal Transportation Security Administration is responsible for security check-in at airports, so bearers of non-compliant documents would no longer be able to travel on common carrier aircraft.

In addition, the federal Social Security Administration, (42 USC section 666 (28)), requires the States to maintain a new hire directory. Employers would no longer be able to accept, or ultimately hire, bearers of non-compliant documents for employment.]

Also, financial institutions are required to assist the Federal Parent Locator Service, (42 USC 666 (17)). Financial institutions would require compliant documents from all customers. Bearers of non-compliant documents would be denied financial or banking services.

Additional federal and state agencies who will require compliant documents are listed, in part, in 42 USC 666 (United States Code Title 42 Section 666).

This sounds related to the Security & Prosperity Partnership that the Bush administration is trying to sneak past the public. We get national ID cards - the Mexicans get Trusted Traveler cards to come and go as they please. The North American Union is created while the uninformed public sits by scratching their heads until it's too late. Now is the time to write our Senators and Congressmen and stop this bad idea. I believe someone posted earlier the addresses on the web to find contact info:

www.house.gov and www.senate.gov

I think it's a good idea to at least send an e-mail. It doesn't cost anything and it only takes a few minutes to voice your opinion against this really bad legislation.

Hmmmm National ID cards sounds like a job creation program for Civil Servants. Since all travellers must have passports by 2008. And we have the Real ID program in place. And you toss in the SS card. I think they already know who we are.
I woulda thought you'd be more concerned about the Patriot Act that took away some of your constitutional rights to be secure in your home?
Example of misuse: I seen a Law and Order episode the other week where they really wanted this guy but couldn't get a search warrant the legal way so they identified him as a "possible" terrorist(sp) and didn't need a warrant. I think the producers snuck that in and some people missed the point they were trying to make.
The Patriot Act was enacted so close after 9/11 that no one really protested too strongly. Had they waited till now it'd be harder to enact.

Hi

The people who did question the Patriot Act were labeled as anti patriots pro terrorist.Hopefully Americans will go back to questioning their government and every move that they make.Only common citizens can protect this country from terrorism. Not the government, leo's or the military.9/11/01 proved that.

Its funny that they called it the Patriat Act.Considering that during the Revoltionary War patriats fought against the standing government and were called traitors and terrorist by the Torys(colonist who supported English rule)and by the English government.

"We must surely hang together or we will surely be hung separately" Benjamin Franklin at the second Continental Congress after finding out that each member of the congress had been charged with treason and terrorism.Sounds like Ben was what people today call a "Liberal"
