More info re Thompson Emergency. I had a interesting conversation with one of their O/O on the way to Chicago the other night. He told me that their Canadian O/O's are members of the Canadian Autoworkers Union, that means they have a very complete benefit program. The loads are over 95% for G.M. so they are tied to G.M's production schedule. The $1500. weekend bonus is only paid if a driver is available every second weekend for a WHOLE YEAR on the calender. Thompson does have American based O/O's but this guy was Canadian so did not know the rates paid to US operators.

He had been with them for 3 years and was happy enough with the money his 5 ton D unit was making. But did complain about going to New Jersey G.M. plants because there was never any freight coming back. They get 40 cents per mile canadian for dead head miles.

Overall it seems like a not bad company, with a rather unusual situation, being o/o's but members of a union. He said he had never been to a meeting of the local, and simply looks at the dues cost as a cost of doing business. Jim Bunting...
