Do you need to have a MC number for a van under 10,000 pounds. I already know that I don't need dot number for this van.

They did away with MC numbers. Replaced it with DOT numbers.

But no, unless you haul HAZMAT, you don't need a DOT number or the old MC number .

Are you going to be your own business? And solicit freight from a direct shipper and/or a freight broker? Are you going to transport freight across state lines?
If any of the above are a Yes! Then yes you need a DOT and MC number and if you go to the FMCSA website they will walk you through the process for $300.00

If you plan on becoming an owner operator leased under someone else’s company/authority than no you’re fine.

If you’re under the 10,000lbs. You are not subject to ELD, paper logs or HOS rules/regulations.

Good luck in your future endeavors.
