I never blamed the guns, the epidemic of mental illness is the problem, guns are just an easy tool to cause the most death and destruction when the ill person decides he (or she) has had enough. There are so many people who are mentally ill that we could never build enough institutions to hold them all, and who would pay for it?

An armed guard at schools would help but would probably only slow someone like this down, take the cop by surprise and he would just be the first fatality.

Where there is a will there is a way, and anything you do to stop things like this from happening can be overcome with enough forethought.

People need to speak up and report people to the authorities who they believe are ill and might do something like this, next time one of the dead might be someone you love.

I'll bet $40 Billion would build and staff an adequate number of institutions for the criminally insane. The taxpayers would pay for it just like the handout we just ponied up for the defense of Ukraine, and nobody blinked an eye. There are also Millions of Covid dollars that are still unspent which could go to safeguarding our schools against lunatics. The politicians waste Billions of dollars every year on stuff we don't even know about. Why not reallocate some of this pork towards securing our schools?

Now it's being reported that there was one armed resource officer at the school that engaged the shooter, and was wounded in the process. He was probably armed with a handgun, and no word as to his level of training or expertise.

An armed officer is similar to a full blown patrol car in the center lane of the road with its lights flashing while it runs radar. Not the best option. Plain nondescript cars, randomly along the roadway, much better chance of doing the job.
One random officer, somewhere in the building or some/several/many indistinguishable individuals scattered randomly about the campus, plus that many more random adult citizens also authorized. Which is more likely to cause a perp to think twice and go elsewhere.

Part of that goes back to the Left's utter (and laughable) ignorance of what "well regulated" means. They see that and get all giddy because... regulations!!!

They figure if they can control guns enough, they can control behavior.

The Left (and Marxism and Fascism, by the way) are all about controlling the materiality of things, as a means to control behavior. One blatant example of that is the Left wanting gas prices to rise to unaffordability. Biden said it out loud the other day when he noted that these higher gas prices are part of an "incredible transition" that people will be forced to suffer through, but once we get through it we'll be weaned off fossil fuels and we'll be using Green Energy. From Day One Biden has done everything he can to control fossil fuel production and gas prices in order to control behavior.

There's an EXCELLENT book titled Unintended Consequences by John Ross. It focuses on the 2nd Amendment but the principle applies everywhere. Basically the "wrongs" keeps pushing and pushing and pushing and infringing repeatedly until finally action is taken, eliminating wrongs. It doesn't take too long nor too many "wrongs" being eliminated until things turn around. I believe the "wrongs" are working industrially to convert this from a work of fiction to a foretelling of what became at their insistance.

The authorities have now admitted that this report is false. There was no school resource officer at the school and the shooter entered through an unlocked door. More details coming out regarding the police response to this situation, but it appears they were woefully unprepared to deal with it.

If there is going to be an officer at these schools they need to be equipped with a full body armor and shield along with heavy fire power(something they can put on in less than a minute). They may be less likely(theoretically anyway) from refraining to immediately engage with a dangerous individual like that.
