Yeah, saves the taxpayers money from potential lawsuits. The end results are the same though, the guy gets the snot beat out of him. Wouldn't it be better to get beaten by professional thugs in uniform than a bunch of drunk, rank amateurs?

Partially, maybe, but if private citizens punish him and then the police & courts do it, it's like it's unanimous. The public & private spheres both condemn him.
