I-Pad vs LapTop

which will work better in a truck ?

the HP L/T i used for the last 5 years is showing it's age, and might be on it's way out soon. (like today!).
will an I-Pad be enough to run my business from a truck ?.

i do have an I-Phone, but do not do much with it. i use it for calls only, and used the L/T for everything else.
on the con side, the thing that worry me the most about apple is that everything cost just a little money, and by the end of the month i will find my self buying all bunch of stuff i do not really need, just because it is right there easily accessible. i do take a lot of restarts away from home, so like any other expediter have a lot of time to kill.
how dose I-Pad interact with other devices ? (flat screen, printer, key board)
i will also need to dump the good internet provider ($), herd that Verizon is pretty good ?, maybe ?
on the pro side, it might be the time for me to wake up and start App'ing up.
can i run a business using only Apple product ?, what is the learning curve ?
thanks.

I have never had a tablet because i use several programs that will not work on it. I think you are limited in that respect but someone with experience will know better.

I use the Drivers Daily Log program so I'm stuck with the laptop. If they come up with a cloud based version I'll take a serious look at the Ipad.

If you like apple check out one of the laptops they make. I doubt you will be able to do all you need with a tablet.

I think you will go blind trying to use the I Pad all the time. Especially if you stay on the internet all the time.

The ipad is slick but it can not do a number of the business things you might want it to. I really recommend getting a blue tooth keyboard. If you are going to be typing a lot it can be a savior.

Problem with an iPad or a Android tablet is the most mapping programs will not work on Apple. Also, many websites that you might use for conferencing, online training and many other things require Internet Explorer to work. No Explorer on Apple.

I wish you could run everything on an Apple. I am typing this on a MacBook Pro.

I would go laptop for my business.

I use an iPad 2. Love it. I started with an app called Numbers. $10. Basically a spreadsheet app. Fairly easy to set up but does have some limitations.

Then I bought Easy Books. Great app. I think its $10 then $20 something for unlimited entries. Real easy to set up and use. Pretty much a full accounting app.

To print from an iPad, you need a printer that will do "air print". I use a 3 in 1 Epson for $60. Both the iPad and printer have to be on the same WiFi. I bought a Verizon mifi to do that. Didn't work. After a day or tech support with Verizon, and who ever made the mifi and Apple, it was figured out wouldn't work. Took it back. I have a Sprint smart phone. Called Sprint and turned on WiFi hotspots for $30 a month for 5 gigs. Works perfect. Printing the accounting docs is a breeze as is printing anything else ie. Email, pics, web stuff.

I also bought an app called Pages. $10. It does word processing, fliers, envelopes, business cards. That kind of stuff.

I have the 16 gig iPad. No 3g connection. If you download high Def movies from itunes, they are usually 5 gig each. So no more than 2 at a time. If you delete one from the iPad, no biggie, it always there in icloud to reload again free. To hook up iPad to tv you need a iPad adapter and hdmi cable. Total about $60. Works great.

The big draw back with iPad is no java. It does java script, but not java. So if you have a web sight that you have to use that uses java, it will not work at all. There is no work around or anything available to make it work.

The battery lasts about 5 or 6 hours and charges fairly quick.

For free movies download a free app Crackle. Works good.
There are plenty of free apps as you probably know with you iPhone.
Having an iPhone, you could also do accounting with the easy books on it also. One of the neat things about that app is taking a picture or your receipt to go along with your entry.

Hope this helps.

Ive got an Android Phone, Samsung Galaxy 4G, and a Samsung Galaxy NOTE, and a ACER 17" laptop, I use them all for different things, mainly the phone has all the APPS I need, Trucker tools, MY PILOT, TRUCKNET, Compass, MAPS,TRUCK MILES etc etc....I use the Note Tab for Pictures, making quick notes, writing notes about directions, shortcuts , restaurants etc...as it has a nice little stylus and NOTE program....it also is a Phone and can run APPS, Music , GPS, and many other programs....The note is a great camera or camcorder and it has programs that can be used for editing, etc...

The Laptop has the best Long Range WIFI reception, and all my Office programs, etc, TRUCK MILES for again Routing but getting quick mileage for state to state etc, its a large display so it doubles as a DVD player, it has onboard Dolby Labs Home Theatre sound for great sound, and I plug it into my new stereo vie 3.5 mini plug, and it sounds great for movie soundtracks etc...

Its also got all my Windows based programs, and is my main work tool after getting stopped for the day, lets me make spreadsheets, Route and Guides, create lists, create photo albums,

Googles Navigation and MAPS is NOT available on Apples products and thats a shame because they are two of the best Navigation/Mapping programs if not the best....an Issue I hope they clear up soon, MAPS by Google is a valuable tool for seeing where your going, getting street or building information with STREET VIEW ....

Apple makes great products although Ive never used them, but there just as good as anyones, Galaxy and Apple are competeing to be the top dogs, Id say if your a serious photographer APPLE has the best programs for that, or if you want to record music, edit video etc, but both Android and Apple offer some good products.
