How Do We Expedite? Let Us Count The Ways

I've been thinking a bit about the many different ways people run their expediting businesses and why they do so. Here are some descriptions of some of the people we have met for starters. Can you add to the list?

A retired married couple driving a B unit as a way to spend time together and see the country.

A 20-something married couple running an ER unit as hard as they can to put away a million dollars before they come off the road to have children.

A 60-something married couple that got into expediting years ago when the factory closed that he worked at many years. They have been earning a living in a D-unit ever since and returning home as the freight allows (don't break a streak, they say).

Two brothers running a D-unit together, bringing money home to their families and bringing themselves home when they can.

A young man and woman, not married and not romantically involved, just out of college driving a fleet owner's truck.

Two fleet-owner brothers running ten trucks between them.

A married couple totally new to truck driving but sick of thier so-called "good" jobs, loving the freedom and income expediting can provide.

A solo B-unit driver that does well financially and boasts about spending most of his money on lot lizards.

A married-couple fleet owner that drives one truck, has drivers in others, and has other business interests too.

A life-long big-rig driver who got into expediting when his wife could join him on the road.

Ah, lets not forget the people who have lost their jobs and can't find good employment to pay the bills at home.

And "A solo B-unit driver that does well financially and boasts about spending most of his money on lot lizards."

I found one better - A solo B-unit driver that does well financially and boasts about losing most of his money at the casinos.

A retired, disabled couple in a van trying to build the retirement they didn't plan for.

A single, antisocial, conspiracy theorist who keeps moving so 'they' cant watch him all the time.

A single man with 4 dogs in his sleeper, who can't understand why he can find the right woman to run team.

A minister who uses his travels to witness to other drivers.

A family of 4 who lost their home when the husband's IT job folded. They are living in the fleet owner's truck until they build up enough reserve for the wife to stay home with the kids.

A 20 something man from a family of truckers, who don't beleive that he can make a living in that little truck... but he does.

An older company owner who doesn't need to drive, but does it because he enjoys it.

I remembered a few more.

The married couple team that did very well as expediters for a number of years, and then left to become U.S. Border Patrol officers.

Two seventy-something men, marginally fit, who teamed up in a fleet owner's truck and left their wives at home because their retirement plans "did not work out."

A married couple team in a big-sleeper show truck, having good success, then in an instant permenantly disabled in a serious traffic accident in which they were not at fault.

An independently wealthy retired executive who took up life on the road, team driving a dry-box straight truck with his wife.

A married couple team dedicated to one account, able to retire, but making too much money to quit working.

A solo driver in a dry-box D unit whose wife came off the road some months ago. He is running the truck until they sell it. After seven years, they concluded that, financially, expediting was the wrong choice for them.

What about the guy who goes to truck driving school works for usa truck and then quits after 2 weeks because"he's no good at backing up" and some owner puts him in an $80,000 d unit and turns him lose on America. Now that's what I call terrorism.:+

The middle age husband/wife formerly company team who bought their own truck, tried running their own authority (bad choice), darn near lost it all, went into expediting 3 weeks ago, got their first paycheck and said maybe their is hope for us yet. Just remember folks.....pinch those pennies tight.;-)

The married couple that four years ago one had a career job at home while the other was on the road full time driving an 18 wheeler. The time spent apart from each other was so unbearable so they decided to team together. They began their driving career in his company owned 18 wheeler, then driving a fleet owner's truck they moved into expediting.

Within months they bought their first truck together (DR-unit).Recently they traded the DR-unit for thier own ER-unit.

Time spent together on the road expediting beats all!!!:)

A 44 year old man with a family of three, tied of making his current small company owner financially well off while I work driving local putting in 60+ hrs a week for only $50,000 per year.

Same man trying to convince his wife that yes a solo driver in a "D" unit can make more than his current income to provide for the needs of his family.

Taking my abilities and applying it to being an owner operator with my first truck. Scared? oh yea but feels great!
