While we feel the fuel surcharge is keeping up in our one-truck straight truck operation, and while the surcharge now applies to authorized deadhead miles as well as loaded miles, high fuel prices are changing our behavior.
We are now more aware of the difference between authorized and personal miles. Where we might have made an out of route trip to get a truck wash before, now we will think about maybe waiting a day or two to get the truck washed while we are on an authorized trip.
Enjoying life on the road, we seldom drive home in the truck. But I am mindful of the folks that go home often. They have to be feeling the effects of the personal miles. As it gets more expensive to go home, getting home less may make expediting less attractive for some, and may become their reason to get out.
I also worry about the effects high fuel prices will have on the transportation industry overall and expediting in particular.
While we receive a fuel surcharge, I have to think that those who have to pay it are looking for ways to reduce shipping costs. Exactly how that will play out over time remains to be seen.
