Hello all. I just started reading the postings on this forum but I promise to continue to do so. I had a couple of questions and maybe you can help me.
I worked with an O/O based in Detroit a while ago but recently I moved to Atlanta. I started my own business, not expediting related, but I am considering supplementing my income by getting into this business also. I already read a couple of postings here but I dare to ask again:
- Can this be done on a side? Meaning would any company want to work with me if I ask only for 2-3 loads/week max? Do they accept someone who's not available at any point?
- Can you find companies that give you short routes only? I understood from a post that for a one person owner/driver Fedex would give you a max of 550 miles route. Is that correct?
- Is there a "better" company for south-east, around Atlanta?

Thank you very much and please be patient with a newbie :)

Hi Zoli,
My best advice to you would be to check with Fed EX and or UPS for potential "local" or airfreight forwarders in your area for some part time P&D, (daycab 22'box).
The post's you refer to on the forum are as being shorts are not necessarily by the concientous choice of the contractor
Look up Complete Transport in your area they pay (if memory serves) 70% of tariff.
Good Luck,
Mike and Cyn

Welcome to E.O. Zoli. Hang tight. When Jeff (jefferson3000) reads this post I'm sure he will give you some good advice. He is familar with airfreight in your neck of the woods.

Do you have a Class A CDL ? I haven't worked in Atlanta for 5 years but I knew O/O's with tractors that made good money moving intermodal trailers to and from railyards .

Yes, I have a class A CDL with the air brakes endorsment (after reading some posts I'm not sure if it's mandatory or optional so I thought I'd mention it). I don't have HAZMAT yet but I think it'll be pretty easy to take if I need it. Could you please give me some details?
Thanks

Like I said , it's been several years since I've worked in Atalnta . I knew 2 o/o's that were leased to Peachtree Truck and Trailer Repair . The trucks were single axle day cabs . They'd pull intermodal trailers from the railyard for repair then deliver them to UPS and Yellow Freight . The Georgia Dome loading docks are too tight for 53' trailers . When shows come in cartage companies bring in 100 or more 45' trailers and the loads are transferred to these trailers . Things change . I know the CSX yard in downtown Atlanta no longer handles intermodal trailers , only containers and chassis . There are o/o's leased to CSX but the seem pretty dissatisfied . Triple Crown is Norfolk Southern's trucking division . Many of their o/o's are home nightly . www.triplecrownsvc.com .

If i read this right,he wanted to know if he could get into expedite as a part time business, and my answer would be no.
It's hard enough to make it here full time.
Even doing inter modal,or air freight deliver locally,it would still be full time, carriers are not interested in part time help.
Now, if he puts a driver in the truck for local delivery, then thats a different situation, and i did say local delivery,Atlanta is a great area for that.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS
