Driving in Midwest

I have been reading the forums on this website for awhile and have acquired alot of answers to my questions, except this one. I am a female looking to drive for someone in the Midwest. I have another income so I don't have to make mucho money, but that would be ok, too. I live about 20 minutes out of Columbus, Ohio and would like to stay within a 500 mile radius for runs. I would prefer a small company, but not a must. However, I would need to be home 4-5 nights a week. I would want to drive a cargo van, preferably for someone else, maybe in a couple of years my own authority. Also if there are any female solo drivers' out there would like to hear your perspective on this business. Any advice or suggestions on where to find a company to drive for would be appreciated.

I don!t want to discourage you but needing to be home 4-5 nights every week isn!t going to work for you unless you own your own van. You are in a excellent area for expediting but most owners are not going to have you coming home empty on a almost daily basis. You might want to think about a local courier or local air freight type of operation.

Thanks for the feedback, Rich. I would like to have my own authority but from what I've read I shouldn't start out that way. I'm not sure what type of freight you are talking about when you say local air freight, could you please explain? Thanks.

I also have a line on expediting special freight, such as, art, rare furniture, rare books that type of thing. Anyone out there doing that? I know the insurance is expensive for that, but it can pay more per mile if you can put up with the uppity ups. :)

air freight picks up at the airport going too differt points through out the state. as rich said thats the best way too get your feet wet and see if you like the business then move into expediting. every body ain,t cut out for expediting ! but thats just my thoughts boxtruck,,,,,,

I think what Rich means is doing courier work for air freight companies, there are a lot of them in your area. This type of work MIGHT get you home every night, and in many instances you can own your own van and do this sort of thing without having operating authority.
