Doing it on our own vs Signing on with a company

Thanks to all of you who give so much of your time to make this WONDERFUL web site possible. I is a God send for us newcomers.
My husband and I live in the Charlotte, North Carolina area and have just bought an F250 extended cab cargo van. Before we sign on with one of the big expeditors, we would like to get some input regarding trying it on our own. Is that a possibility for a driver who has lots of tractor-trailer experience, but no expeditor experience. We don't have to make the big bucks, but do need to make a living. I know some of you do it on you own - what is your advise for folks like us? We will appreciate any help here!

JustPassinThru, I love the handle, and I've been doing that most of my life.

Before trying it on my own, I would hook up with All State Express right there in Charlotte and learn the business first, as it is a little different from running regular freight in a big truck. If you decide to try some of the other expediting companies, they all have work OUT of Charlotte, but you want to be able to get back in the area too. The best way is to get paid for the trip.

Just the word Expediting tells you that you would have difficulties doing it on your own.You may find a shipper that is willing to use you in an Expedite situation but you must be AVAILABLE at that moment. If you are not they will go elsewhere and when the need arises again they will not look for you. Invariably when a shipper that you have built a relationship with wants you,you will be hundreds of miles away.
I would recommend as Vernon did to sign on with one of the established players,Allstate or Nations Express are both located in NC and have been around for a while. They can also get you a backhaul home which would not be easy on your own.
