In addition to operating authority, you'll also have to get set with Customs to clear freight.

what is involved with getting canadian authority and cost?
is it worth extra aggrevation

There is not a single "Canadian Authority" as each province issues their own.
You would apply to the provinces you would expect to serve.
These are found on the internet; usually under the Ministry of Transport in the provincial listings.
You would also register with the CBSA and apply for a Carrier Code. You would have to obtain bar codes showing the number in the proper format.

Whether it is worth the "extra aggrevation" would depend on your customer base.

You are, however, posting in the "Newbie Paradise". Are you looking to start a carrier yourself or to lease on to one?

If you are leasing onto a carrier they should provide the operating authorities and the Customs registration. They should also be able to explain the proper border procedures to minimize the "extra aggrevation".

I hope this answers your question.
