Can someone please explain this to me

I had a lot of physics classes and I learned that there are forces of nature that will never be changed, gravity is one of them and fluid dynamics is another one.

The breaking news today has been this terrorist plan to blow up the Holland tunnel and flood Manhattan. CNN and MSNBC went on about this for a while.

I don’t doubt that the planners did a lot of engineering work towards formulating the plan. I know that may have learned what a tunnel is, they checked out the Holland tunnel, they figured out how much explosives to use and even the types of vehicle to use.

But I am wondering how they planned to get the water to move from sea level to the height of 75 feet and than travel a mile away to flood Manhattan once the tunnel collapses?

My guess is the momentum from water rushing through the tunnel will push it back into the streets. A mile? That's hard to fathom. My guess is there would be some water out that far, but the sewers would quickly take it down again.
