C&M Transport, Sounds good

Does anyone have any experience with this company??
I like the sound of the base pay of $1.25 per mile for a "D" unit, and a company with fewer than 50 trucks, but I have other concerns I have listed below.
I have spoken to a few drivers for C&M Transport out of the Cleveland, OH area recently. It sounds a bit to good to be true, all the drivers say they are running real well, with many solos claiming to be doing 10k per month. The teams do not seem to be as happy with the dispatch operations. The catch here is it seems in talking with the solos, they all said the same thing, C&M does not believe in running a truck even close to legal as far as length of trip versus the log book. They work on the closest truck, not the closest truck (team) that can do it legally. A lot of NYC runs, with little or no extra pay, after the extra tolls involved. The most troubling thing I have heard is that they use an illegal pay plan similar to PantherII, well over the legal 15 days they legally have to get your check to you, no fuel cards, and advances are like pulling teeth. Also they take back half of the cargo? insurance from you, and I'm not sure if this is even legal (carrier cannot require you to use their ins) The drivers I spoke with said this can amount to a large amount taken out of your check each month. (average of about 3% of the trucks gross per month) so 10k to the truck in a month means about 300.00 going back into the owners pocket.

OK here are the pluses, I would be running team, and hope that would take care of the log problems. But I'm going to be ticked if I find solo's getting team runs and having to run illegal to complete them They do seem to be able to keep their trucks running a lot better than the FedEx, Panther, Tri-State crowd. Lot's of long runs out to the West coast, little freight coming back. Depending on the driver's spoken with d/h averages 20% to around 50% with the teams being higher because of the CA runs. I also hear that some of the employees in the office either own trucks or have relatives who own them, which can be bad if freight slows down. Pay is always accurate, and if a mistake is made, it is corrected in a timely fashion.

One of the best things is no Qualcomm or highway ******** to pay for, but you must have a nationwide cell phone and pager, which seems to me is about equal in cost, and then you add in the 1/2 of the ins, it seems it could be more expensive to run with this company. Any input, good or bad would be appreciated, I have had it with my current company and need to make a new start at the beginning of the year. I wouldn't ask, but it does appear this could be a good opportunity.
Thank You

I met a couple at the Flying J in Memphis who drove for them. They were from Texas and they said they lost their shirt with this outfit. They told another driver there that they were going home and parking the truck.

I just wanted to comment on your concerns about C&M so that there isn't any confusion on how we do things around here. I know how these message boards can get and hope that it doesn't happen with our company. First off we are strict enforcers of "First in, First Out" team or solo. There is plenty of freight out there for everyone, no matter who you are. This is only fair to all drivers. If the load is more miles than a single driver can log, the freight is switched to a truck that can finish the run legally. This is done by a network of companies we deal directly with and have a good reputation with. Our average load is 500-600 miles with a 24-hour window, plenty of time for a single to complete the run. If our customer requests a team, they get a team, even if a solo driver is in line before the team truck. Our customers requests come first, so if anything, solo drivers would have more to complain about than our team drivers.

As far as our pay goes, we hold back three weeks just like many other companies do, after those three weeks you are promptly paid on a weekly basis as long as you get your original BOL's to us. This is to compensate for the 30 to 60 days it takes for us to collect our money from our customer. We do not make you open up an escrow account either. When signing on with us there is no out of pocket cost to you. We pay for your signs and permits, you only have to pay for your pre-employment drug screen, and that is billed to you after about a month of running. You will never hear of any problems with our pay to the drivers and we take great pride in that fact. As far as fuel cards and advances go we do not have those programs, but we have found that these services can get a O/O in trouble with relying on up front money to run. You are a business owner and should be able to run your business without getting advances from us. C&M can't go to our customer and ask for 40% of the money up front.

Insurance. We do not require you to use our insurance company for your bobtail ins. You are free to get that from anyone you may choose. We pay the cargo and half the liability ins. the half you pay goes directly to the insurance company and NOT THE OWNERS POCKET. This is also based on revenue per month. So if you made 10k for the month you would be deducted 280.00 for half of the liability portion of the insurance. Once this problem is corrected we hope to be able to compensate the drivers for the money that they have had to pay. We haven't had one complaint about this situation with any current drivers because they know we would not be doing this unless it was absolutely necessary. Besides who's going to complain when you are averaging 10-12k a month.

We dont use satellite tracking because we like to think if we put on an O/O that they are responsible contractors and we don't have to hold there hand and be in control of there day to day
operations. The pagers are the first line of communication with the O/O and if we don't hear back from you within 5-10 minutes, depending on the situation we will call the cell and ask for you to call back on a land line.

As for the message posted by "hammerdown" the only contractors we have ever had drive for us out of Texas would be Wendy:A.K.A WendyCal on this forum. If you have any questions about us I suggest you contact her.

I hope I was able to shed some light on our company and would hope that any more comments posted will be constructive ones coming from individuals that know first hand how we do things at C&M. People ask me all the time, "How much can I expect to make with your company"? My answer to that question is, "It depends on your availability and flexibility". Unfortunately you cannot please everyone all the time as with any company, but I can tell you our driver turnover is very low, so apparently we must be doing something right. I like to believe it is the honesty and candidness we share with our O/O.

By the way, currently we are not putting on any O/O.

Thank-You

dinger,

That was one drivers opinion. Most people have the common sense to realize that. Like you said you can't please everyone all the time!

HammerDown, we can't remember ever being at the Flying J in Memphis -- we usually hit the Petro, the few times we've been there. i don't believe you will ever find anyone that we've ever said those things to about C&M -- the other company's we've been with would be another story, however! :) Perhaps your friend confused what we said about the company we were with right before C&M, who were directly responsible for our present situation, as well as the actual location...

Gubba, as far as i know, everything Digger said is true! We have made more money, with less heartache and heartburn, and more freedom, with C&M than with any of the other three companies we had the misfortune to run for. Our best month EVER, $16,000, happened with C&M! They are absolute STICKLERS about correct pay; in fact, we merely mentioned a minor shortage on a check, and the very next check, the disputed amount was included on our settlement! C&M is an EXCELLENT company, and if you've been offered a chance to run for them, GO FOR IT! i don't believe you'll be sorry -- if you are, it'll be for lost layover time, and you'll be crying all the way to the BANK! ;-)

We did come home to turn in our truck -- but the fact that we're declaring bankruptcy has NOTHING to do with the time we ran for C&M. (i'm in the process of composing a post all about the 'Why' of it.)

i've previously advised that anyone looking for a good company to run for should look for a SMALL company -- you'll get to know your dispatchers, you'll be able to recognize the owner, and the payroll department will probably work with you in those awkward times. The reason i give that advice is personal experience -- with C&M!

They're a great company, and as a matter of fact, we're currently looking for an owner to run for -- with C&M!

(If you get the idea that we're extremely happy with this company, you're RIGHT! lol)

Godspeed to all of you out there on the highways and byways!
