Batteries vs generator

Was wondering why I couldn't have 6 more deep cell batteries installed. I would have an inverter installed on those batteries plus have an inverter on original 3. Use the 6 batteries for main power for tv, heater when needed, and then just put a portable A.C. out window when needed( yes, kind of a hassle - but you have to do what you have to do). I'm very conservative on energy use. When that power ran low, you could switch to the inverter with the 3 original batteries, start engine for a while to charge the 6 deep cell batteries, or wait until driving again. And PRESTO - no 6000 - $8000 for a APU. Pros or cons would be most helpful.

P.S. Don't have a lap top yet, so won't be able to answer any questions if they arise until get back home to computer.

Negatives would include if/when the engine won't start because the inverter on the 3 batteries was used a little too long after the 6 batteries were exhausted. I don't think they'd last all that long in Rockford at -9 degrees running a space heater either. There's just no substitute for an APU yet. In time there will be I'm sure but we aren't there yet.

Well it would work if wired correctly, load anticipation is confirmed and you have a big (very big) alternator to recharge the battery bank.

The last item is critical as is a very good regulator that is setup to properly charge the bank based on temp, load present and type of batteries. I think also with the weight of the battery bank (6V deep cycle batteries I think weigh somewhere around 61lbs each, six would put on over 360lbs) and how you deal with properly venting the system (a lot of H2 created) and how to properly keep the water level up so you don't burn the battery out.
