A 'green' inspired catastrophe.

The 'green' inspired retrofit of this building apparently created a chimney effect when it caught on fire and engulfed it in flames.
Warnings about this happening apparently fell on deaf ears.(in article)
Many more buildings have been similarly retrofitted.
Article excerpt below:
The Telegraph noted that cladding “is used as an insulation to make buildings more sustainable to meet green energy requirements.” Some 30,000 buildings in the U.K. have been retrofitted with cladding to cheaply comply with green energy mandates.

Grenfell Tower became more energy efficient, but the space between the cladding and the building increased the potential damage from fires, leaving hundreds of residents at the fire’s mercy.

its too bad it took the lose of so many lives...for this to come to the front.....But "Green" is still the way to go...they just need better engineering...

Sounds like they chose the wrong materials, so once again the lowest bid got the job, and sub standard materials are the cause. Nice way to say "green is bad" for the anti-environmentalist crowd.

They apparently used materials that are commonly used for refurbishing buildings.
One of the issues is that they chose to retrofit the building instead of demolishing it.
So yeah, they did it with the cheaper version.
I know, it's not economical to go to the extreme of demolishing a building. Maybe they shouldn't bother with retrofitting existing buildings and creating chimneys with human beings inside.
The whole building went up in an inferno started by a faulty refrigerator in one room.
One fire expert said he's never seen a building burn like this in his 30 years of dealing with fires.
Let us not choose green ideas at the expense of safety for people.
The concerns about cladding were brought up for quite awhile, but apparently were discarded in favor of overall environment concerns.

Looks like you are right about the sub standard materials part:
Article excerpt:
The company operating Grenfell installed cladding in 2015 as part of a $12 million retrofit. The Kensington and Chelsea Tenant Management Organization, which owns the building, installed a cheaper cladding made of “powder-coated aluminium panels that are usually filled with plastic insulation, which is flammable,” The Guardian reported.
