I read your blog this morning.
The "BC Game" refers to the Canadian Football League (we call it The CFL) game between Montreal and the BC Lions. The Vancouver team represents the entire province of British Columbia. Since you were in Saskatoon you were in Rider Country. The Regina team respresents all of Saskatchewan. They are the Rough Riders. Saskatchewan was playing the Edmonton Eskimos.
The town names were likely assigned by the railways when they were being built across the Canadian Prairie. They built a station every few miles for telegraph and water. Those stations became the local towns. The names were assigned alphabetically going west from Winnipeg.
You spent the weekend in the heartland of Canada.
