You can go to the .17, but if you are just shooting cans and snakes 22 is fine. Ruger 10/22 should do fine for ya.

Idontknow That was my first question to the orig poster...why? The shorter chamber is dead on, lenghten it looses some ability to lay a smack down on some paper or varmitts. I would stick with the .223 and go with the RRA if the need is there.
