How high shoud I install the e-track on the sides of my chevy cargo van?

I'm going to buy a GPS unit and mapping software for my laptop.Does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations.I've checked out the Delorme and Microsoft Streets and Trips.Is one better than the other?
