    Good retirement job?

Wow. If I wanted to go whenever they called, I’d be an employee. I’ve done very well as an independent Independent Contractor. Edit: never in a van. Always as a well credentialed straight with liftgate, HM, etc. Never let the carrier think you need the money. It’s more fun negotiating when you...

I understand not everyone can drive straights, but for newbies, Vegas is great for straights. Gaming equipment out, often round trips. New machines to casinos, old machines back to be refurbished or properly scrapped.

    Good retirement job?

I never said buy a reefer. I said that’s what I’m familiar with. But with reefer teams being able to do $1800 for a 100 mile run, or $4485 for 1285 miles straight through, that 2013 Cascadia Reefer looks good for under $100,000. And they said they wanted to enjoy retirement, not live in a tin...

    Straight truck driver tire suggestions

If you haven’t checked your wheel bearings lately, do it every now and then. They will cause edge wear. And edge wear is normal with a lot of drive tire patterns. Your 120 day inspection and typical PM doesn’t check wheel bearings. I’d do it every 6 months or so unless I see reason to do it...

    Good retirement job?

I’d argue that point. So much of what straights do now is really LTL. Much is set up weeks in advance or are weekly runs. My experience is reefer straights. I can name you a dozen cities that have weekly pharma runs. Sometimes would book a load and then ask can I have Tuesdays load from X to...

    Good retirement job?

I think once you make the investment into a straight you change from a commodity to a partner. Less brokers and a better relationship with your carrier. Less spot freight maybe ? When you can commit to stuff a week out, the carriers love that. Zorry is loading 7 days after his last delivery...

    Good retirement job?

My theory wrapped around running a week or two and then taking a week or two off to visit relatives or sightsee. Of course your carrier needs to be onboard. We sometimes would get a room, maybe book a load a week out, and rent a car to sightsee. Some areas have great public transportation. For...

    Good retirement job?

Great job for someone in your position. Look into a small straight. They drive like a car now and you can be very comfortable. Also, easy to go to Motels when the urge hits you. You can always rent a car to do some sightseeing that you’re not comfortable doing in the truck. The income...

Expedite Expo From An Owner Operators View (Amazing)

Stykemain has the cab/Chassis on the ground. You don’t have to wait for one to be built. They supply the motor home business. And most have a 16,000+ steer axle. Which is what you want, but may not know it. Unfortunately the sleeper builders are backed up. Still, may cut build time by a few...

To me, the Volvo is the game changer. The shower/toilet is nice. I wonder if we’ll ever hear “Remember when most DR units were Freightliners “ ?

    Straight truck driver tire suggestions

The lack of tread depth may be offset by design. They may wear better, making up for the tread difference. When I was at Heartland Express they ran steer tires on the trailers. One of the most profitable truckload carriers out there. They probably figured the price difference was worth the...

    Straight truck driver tire suggestions

Great idea. Better fuel mileage, better ride, and quieter. All you lose is traction. If traction is an issue, for the price of steel wheels, have traction tires on steel wheels for winter, and steer tires on polished wheels for spring, summer, and fall.

That’s the best thing about retirement. You can be home almost everyday. It’s better if the wife likes to cook and is good at it.
